Glossary Term: Bleed

Images that run outside the border of the panel, running off the page are in the ‘Bleed’. When an image runs outside the panel on all four sides, it is called a full bleed. Comic book covers frequently use a full bleed. This can be used as a powerful dramatic tool, for example in manga this is a part of the storytelling vocabulary. This can prove to be a difficult task when creating your own comics, you can only “see” bleeds in the final printed book so making sure you have all of your important art in the “safety zone” is essential.
