Disney has a Morgue and it’s not what you think

Preservation on an epic scale

Steamboat Willie

A morgue? Isn’t that where they keep the dead bodies? Why on earth would Walt Disney have a Morgue?

It may sound rather macabre but Walt Disney did in fact have a facility he liked to call “The Morgue”, but it was actually a place to store the animation cells. To this day its still in operation and its actually a place for conservation and restoration. Disney is trying to preserve and store all its aging animation and saving this degrading material is proving to be a daunting task.

Original animation cells from old films like these are showing their age and starting to degrade.

Head on over to Gizmodo for an in depth look at just how they do it.

Behind the Scenes at the Disney ‘Morgue’ Where Animation History Is Being Saved

Gizmodo went behind the scenes at the “Disney Morgue” to see how Walt Disney’s animation history is being preserved for future generations. The morgue has everything from the earliest drawings for short cartoons like Mickey Mouse’s Steamboat Willie (1928) to animation cels from movies like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937) to stunning reference art from films like Moana (2016).
